Making A Case for A Social Value Act of Nigeria

We propose that it is about time for Nigeria to enact a Social Value Act. A Social Value Act of Nigeria, enacted and enforced by the federal, state, and local governments, will serve the purpose of trying to ensure that any services contracted out to the public, that is, any public services contract, will consider the total economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the communities they affect, and try to provide for them. The previous model of capitalism and our economic model proposed by Milton Friedman, Adam Smith and others, told us that the one and only social responsibility of business was to use its resources to engage in activities designed to increase profits. That if you acted in your own self-interest, you will automatically do good for society.

But with nearly 7 billion people in the world, including 1 billion in Africa, that economic model has failed to address the challenges of society such as hunger, poverty, and security.

We define Total Value as the total social, economic, and environmental value created by a program for all its stakeholders, that is, the people and/or organizations that affect or are affected by the program. It is the total return on investment of a program or a set of activities. The cumulative changes, both positive and negative, that arise from an organization’s work or initiatives.

We Measure Total Value

We use the Total Value framework and Impact Map to measure the real changes that are relevant to the people and the organizations that contribute to and/or are affected by a program or initiative. The Total Value framework is based on social accounting principles and cost-benefit analyses, and is guided by key principles.
